Starting a new job as a delivery rider is an exciting milestone. Whether you’re slipping into your helmet for the first time, hopping on a scooter, or getting ready to take your first delivery, it’s natural to feel a mix of excitement and nerves. At Marketplace Company, we’ve welcomed many gig workers into our team, and we want to help you hit the ground running.
Here’s a friendly guide to what your first day will look like — what to expect, how to prepare, and how to make the most of this new opportunity.
Morning — Onboarding & Welcome
Your day will typically start at our operations hub or the designated start point. You’ll be welcomed by our onboarding team and introduced to one of the most important programmes we offer: the Nest benefits scheme (which covers your accommodation and food during work assignments).
We’ll take some time to walk you through:
- Your rider kit (uniform, helmet, delivery bag)
- The vehicle or scooter you’ll be using
- Our safety and route-protocol guidelines
- How to log in to our delivery app and track your shifts
You’ll also be introduced to fellow delivery partners and support staff, which means you won’t feel like you’re going in alone. It’s a chance to ask questions, clarify your route, find your colleagues, and feel part of the Marketplace rider community.
Mid-day — Getting Into Gear
Once you’ve had the paperwork and introductions, you’ll head out on your first shift (sometimes accompanied by a mentor rider). This is where the real learning begins:
- Familiarising yourself with the delivery app and how the workflows function
- Navigating routes and drop-off points
- Managing your first delivery process — from pick-up to confirmation
- Practicing punctuality and customer service standards
Expect to take it a little slower on your first day — that’s perfectly fine. The goal is to build confidence, know the process, and get comfortable with your equipment and tech.
Afternoon — Support & Feedback
After your first few deliveries, you’ll return to base (or take a break) and have a check-in with your mentor or shift supervisor. This is when you’ll:
- Review your performance and challenges
- Ask for tips about routes and customers
- Learn to handle delays or scooter issues
- Understand how to report customer changes
Support is built in. At Marketplace Company, our “Nest concept” isn’t just accommodation and food—it’s also about creating a nest of support for you: guidance, training, and a community.
By the time you finish your first day, you’ll feel part of a supportive rider team rather than just a new hire.
What to Bring & What to Wear
To ensure your first day goes smoothly:
- Wear comfortable, safe clothing (closed shoes, weather-appropriate outerwear)
- Bring your driver’s licence/ID and required paperwork
- Bring your smartphone (with charger) — our delivery app is mobile-centric
- Carry water and snacks for long shifts
- Be ready to ask questions and learn
What We Expect From You
As a delivery rider joining our team, we have a few expectations:
- Safety-first mindset: wear your helmet, obey traffic rules, use safe riding practices
- Reliability: show up on time, be ready for your shift
- Customer focus: treat every delivery like the last mile counts
- Learning mindset: ask for help, review your performance, improve
- Team spirit: be cooperative, supportive, and kind
