When a new industrial corridor is planned, the checklist is familiar: power, water, roads, logistics, single-window clearances. What almost never appears on it is where the workforce will live. The machines get infrastructure; the people who run them are left to improvise.
That omission has consequences. A plant can be built in months, but if its workers can't find stable, affordable housing nearby, the corridor never reaches its potential. Attrition stays high, quality stays low, and the promised productivity leaks away one departure at a time.
Worker accommodation belongs on the infrastructure checklist for the same reason roads and power do: without it, the corridor doesn't function at full capacity. It is foundational, not optional, the layer that turns a cluster of factories into a working ecosystem.
The reason it's overlooked is that its absence is invisible. There's no blackout when housing fails, no traffic jam, just a slow, distributed drag on recruitment, retention and output that no single line item captures. It is easy to ignore precisely because it never shows up as a crisis.
Treating accommodation as infrastructure changes how corridors are planned. Build the living layer alongside the industrial one, and the workforce arrives, stays and compounds. Leave it out, and the most expensive input in a labour-intensive economy, trained, willing workers, keeps walking away.
